Writers Guild of America Writers Strike

This week, Disney and Warner Bros. Studios sent out a letter to showrunners employed by its various studios. The purpose of the letter was to remind the writers and producers on strike that they are still contractually obligated to perform their non-writing services.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the letter from the legal department of ABC Signature — owned by Disney — says:

“We want to specifically reiterate to you as a showrunner or other writer-producer that you are not excused from performing your duties as a showrunner and/or producer on your series as a result of the WGA strike. Your personal services agreement with [the] Studio requires that you perform your showrunner and/or producing duties even if the WGA attempt to fine you for performing such services during this strike…Your duties as a showrunner and/or producer are not excused, suspended, or terminated until and unless you are so notified in writing by the Studio.”

The letter was written by the assistant chief counsel for the Disney-owned ABC Signature, Bob McPhail. We also noticed that the date on the letter was May 3 , which was the second day of the Writer’s Guild of America’s strike.

Writers have been on strike in Los Angeles and New York since May 2 and are seeking increased wage floors, viewership transparency from streamers, and protections against the use of artificial intelligence, among other issues.

They spent six weeks negotiating with Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Discovery-Warner, NBC Universal, Paramount, and Sony under the umbrella of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

In a statement provided to Deadline, the AMPTP said they “presented a comprehensive package proposal to the Guild last night which included generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals.”

The letter from Disney also features a Q&A that informs show runners that they are required to perform duties that are not in line with the guidance provided by the WGA to its near 11,500 striking members.

The letter specifically states that showrunner and/or writer-producers, “may, along with other non-writing services, be required to perform services commonly referred to as ‘a. through h.’ services as a producer.”

According to the Q&A part of the document, the “a. through h.” services include: cutting for time, assignment of lines to other existing characters occasioned by cast changes, instructions, directions, or suggestions, whether oral or written, made to writer regarding story or screenplay, and more.

The WGA Strike rules strongly forbid union members from performing the aforementioned duties during the strike. “The Rules prohibit hyphenates (members who are employed in dual capacities) from performing any writing services, including the ‘(a) through (h)’ functions.” This puts showrunners and writer-producers in a very difficult position.

The second season of the Disney + series “Star Wars: Andor” is expected to resume despite the writers’ strike. According to Variety:

“Similarly, while “Andor” executive producer Tony Gilroy is not on set and no longer writing — scripts were locked in before the strike — sources say he is still working as a producer on specific, non-writing elements like casting and scoring for the Disney + show.”

“Andor” began production back in November 2022, so there’s a good chance that much of the filming has already been completed.

The boat, which has been evacuated, was stranded between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain.

According to Twitter user Figment666, guests were evacuated from the Liberty Belle using rafts from Tom Sawyer Island.

Zarg-Bits – $8.50

Crispy Rice Paper, Buñuelos Corn Chips, Veggie Chips, Seasoned Roasted Pistachios

We tried the Zarg-Bits and thought they tasted like a spicy Chex-Mix. They weren’t bad at all. Although it wasn’t listed as one of the ingredients, we thought we tasted dried fruit in there at one point.

The mixture of sweetness and spiciness complemented each other very well. Overall, we liked this snack.

The Zarg-Bits aren’t the only new food and beverage offering at Avengers Campus this week. Several Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired items are now available celebrating the third film in the series.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3”

“Guardians of the Galaxy” focuses on a group of extraterrestrial criminals on the run who initially team up for just causes when they tangle themselves in a dangerous struggle between Xandar and Kree fanatical Ronan the Accuser. 

“Vol. 3” is the long-awaited conclusion to a trilogy that began with 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” A relatively unknown team of superheroes to the general public before this film’s release, the franchise is now one of Marvel’s most popular and critically acclaimed, with the first two films grossing a combined $1.64 billion, as well as scoring 92% and 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.

The Guardians have also made appearances in “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” — plus a roughly half-feature-length Holiday Special on Disney+. They’ve spawned a series of video games, and are now featured in two Disney Parks attractions: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and Mission: Breakout at Disney California Adventure. 

James Gunn, doubling as writer and director, has repeatedly expressed his profound desire to wrap the trilogy up with the utmost propriety, calling it “the hardest thing I’ve ever done” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. 

Avengers Campus

After delays due to COVID-19, Avengers Campus finally opened at Disney California Adventure in June 2021. Another version of the land opened in Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris in July 2022.

In California, Avengers Campus was constructed around Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, a reskin of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror that opened in 2017. WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure is at both versions of the land (known as Spider-Man WEB Adventure in Paris). Avengers Assemble: Flight Force, a retheme of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, is unique to Walt Disney Studios Park.

“Rogers: The Musical” is coming to the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure as a short, one-act performance for a limited time this summer. The teaser video showed a woman dressed much like Peggy Carter heading into the Hyperion Theater with a playbill for “Rogers: The Musical.” The show was first seen in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.”

Noodle — the First Canine Walt Disney Imagineer

When Jacklyn received an offer to become a communications professional intern at Walt Disney Imagineering, her team soon discovered that a furry friend would be joining her. Not only was Jacklyn joining the team, but so was her service dog, Noodle.

Noodle is the first canine Imagineer in the United States, and she quickly stole the hearts of everyone at the Florida campus.

Jacklyn and Noodle’s story began in 2020 when they shared an instant connection.

“I remember throwing Dollie – now Noodle – a toy when we first met, but she had no interest in it. Instead, she curled herself right in my lap, and I knew she was coming home with me,” Jacklyn explained. “Since then, I can count on one hand the amount of times we’ve been apart. She’s a lover, a cuddler, and she saves my life on a constant basis.”

Jacklyn has issues with her cardiac and respiratory systems, so Noodle is her “right-hand pup.” Noodle is a trained service dog that goes everywhere with Jacklyn — including work.

“Walt Disney Imagineering has gone above and beyond to accommodate Noodle and make sure she’s happy, healthy, and safe,” Jacklyn said. “I never thought I’d adopt a service animal, and it was intimidating coming into a new space without knowing how people would react to her. Noodle was accepted immediately, and she’s truly a member of the Imagineering team.”

Noodle is a beloved Imagineer and is a wonderful addition to the Florida campus. In her spare time, Noodle tends to dozens of rubber ducks under Jacklyn’s desk, lounges in her orthopedic bed, or visits cubicles searching for pets and cuddles. Jacklyn’s team recently threw Noodle a surprise fourth birthday party, “complete with puppy presents and a cake.”

“Noodle doesn’t just keep me safe. She makes everyone else happy too, which melts my heart,” Jacklyn said. “Imagineering legends that I’ve idolized my entire life love Noodle as much as I do. Whether it’s a smile in the hallway or pets around the office, I hear all the time that their days are instantly better when they meet her.”

Korean Fried Chicken Bowl with Cucumber Namasu- $15.49

Double-fried Chicken Thighs tossed with Gochujuang Sauce, Sesame Seeds, Green Onions, and Pickled Cucumber

Chef Kevin, an Executive Chef at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, wanted to create a Korean Comfort Food dish inspired by his mother. Kevin is one of the many talented Cast Members being honored for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

We found the Korean Fried Chicken Bowl at Capt. Cooks at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Upon trying this dish, we thought that the chicken was perfectly cooked, very crispy, and served hot. Fresh made-to-order food is one of the things that sets apart the resort counter service dining from the parks.

The generously-sized pieces of chicken look suspiciously like the ubiquitous Disney chicken breast nuggets. Our suspicions were confirmed upon cutting into one of the pieces of chicken and seeing white meat inside.

Don’t let that dissuade you, though, because the Gochujuang sauce is the star of the show here. We found it to be surprisingly spicy for a Disney counter service offering. It was delicious and spot on for flavor. The heat lingers on the tongue for a while.

The pickled cucumbers were a fantastic accompaniment. It was pleasantly tangy to offset the spice of the main course.

Our only complaint is that the pickled cucumbers aren’t served separately, so they warmed up rapidly when included in the main bowl with the chicken and rice. We would have preferred them to be cold.

Though this is a limited time offering, it is good enough that we hope it can be considered for a permanent menu addition. It should be easy, considering they simply use the chicken breast nuggets, and the only unique ingredient required is the sauce.

Although we stopped at Capt. Cooks at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to try this dish, it is also available at the following locations for the month of May:

Park Icons Ear Headband with Removable Bow- $34.99

We found the new ear headband at the Emporium at Magic Kingdom on Main Street, U.S.A. The headband and one side of the ears are black, with each of the park icons in gold.

The sequined Minnie Mouse bow in the center can be easily removed.

The back of the ears features inverted colors. It’s gold with black silhouettes of the park icons. The bow can also be moved to this side if you prefer this look.

The left ear features silhouettes of “Spaceship Earth from EPCOT and Cinderella Castle from Magic Kingdom.

The right ear features silhouettes of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror from Disney’s Hollywood Studios and The Tree of Life from Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

As you can see in the above picture, the gold sequined bow is detachable and can easily snap on and off.

The Walt Disney World logo is written in gold on the side of the headband.

The ears and headband are made of simulated leather. The inside of the headband has a black, non-slip velvet interior.

New Nametags for Walt Disney World Cast Members

Walt Disney World Cast Members will receive new nametags that were designed especially for them.

The new design will feature a gold star above a navy-colored silhouette of Cinderella Castle. This is to represent Cast Members as “the guiding light for The Most Magical Place on Earth.” The nametags also feature white stars throughout.

As we previously reported, Cast Members were to receive the new nametags soon, but won’t begin wearing them until May 16.

Cast Members with special themed nametags, such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, will receive the new designs but will continue to wear the themed ones in the parks.

Recently, Disney shared a video on Facebook of the nametag creation process at the Walt Disney World Engraving Department to announce the new nametags. The post reads, “For cast members, Disney is a calling to be part of something extraordinary, something magical, and something incredibly unique. Our Disney nametags are a symbol that connects us to our guests and each other, and this spring, Walt Disney World cast will receive a new nametag with a never-before-seen design just for them.”

The new design wasn’t shown in the video, only the current EARidescent 50th anniversary and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge nametags. Disney wrote to Cast Members, “We’re not quite ready to reveal the design yet, but prepare for some magical mail.”

At the beginning of The World’s Most Magical Celebration, Cast Members were given sparkling nametags with a golden border and the 50th Anniversary Cinderella Castle logo at the top. Though the celebration is officially over, Cast Members were instructed to continue wearing their 50th anniversary nametags.

Disneyland Resort Cast Members received new Disney100 nametags recently that list their favorite Disney character instead of their hometown. Last year, Imagineers also debuted new shiny nametags celebrating 70 years of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Pineapple Crisp Sundae – $6.79

We stopped at Animal Kingdom today to try the new Pineapple Crisp Sundae at Tamu Tamu.

The Pineapple Crisp Sundae reminds us of a crumble cake with vanilla ice cream on top.

After taking the first bite, we found it to taste almost exactly like apple pie, consistency and all. It didn’t really taste like pineapple. If there was any hint of pineapple in there, it was too subtle.

We wish that this came with pineapple Dole Whip instead of vanilla ice cream so that it had a stronger pineapple presence. If you are a fan of apple pie or desserts that come with ice cream, you would like this.

You can try the Pineapple Crisp Sundae today for $6.79 at Tamu Tamu in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Soundtrack

Guests who have been on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser have already been treated to the beautiful voice of Gaya, but starting May 4th, everyone will have a chance to experience it.

Here is a track list from the new soundtrack:

According to d23.com, each of the songs have a special meaning. Here is how they describe each track:

“Welcome to the New World”
What better song to open with on the Halcyon? “Welcome to the New World” embraces the mystery and magic of new horizons and the connections we all share across the galaxy. Through this song, Gaya creates a powerful connection with her audience. It is both an introduction to and an invitation to join her in… a new world—her world.

“Gaya!”
Gaya makes no secret of her past. She is proud of her roots in the underground and what she’s achieved on her meteoric rise. This may be her namesake song, but hearing her name echo across the galaxy is not about her own fame and fortune. “Gaya!” is a celebration of knowing what you want, facing challenges to get it, and fighting for what you believe.

“Hayananeya”
“Hayananeya” refers to one of Ryloth’s sacred “singing stones.” Twi’lek legend holds that the songs of these stones were intoned to the vibrations of the galaxy itself, and that they held mystical powers of navigation. The singing stones have long been lost to Ryloth’s turbulent history of invasion and occupation. In this powerful anthem, Gaya hears the song of the Hayananeya stone and calls out to it, wishing for its return to its rightful home of Ryloth.

“Coaxium”
While on its surface, it might seem like a song about the fuel that enables hyperspace travel, at its core “Coaxium” is truly about power: who has it, how it’s leveraged, and the ability of power to bring freedom and take you anywhere in life.

“Poverty of Love”
A deeply meaningful song to Gaya, “Poverty of Love” is an intimate look into the shadows just behind the dazzling light of a superstar. From the top, you can see everything—and remember what was lost on the way up.

“Rockstar Queen”
When this song hit the holonet, it took the galaxy by solar storm. A dance craze was born—the Ryloth Slide—that’s easy to learn and hard to resist. No matter how you get around—feet, wheels, or tentacles—“Rockstar Queen” will get you moving. You know you’re a rockstar…now it’s time to show the galaxy.

“Oola Shuka”
Written in Gaya’s native tongue, “Oola Shuka” celebrates her Twi’lek culture. It translates to “Free Yourself,” in a fusion of rhythmic stylings with diverse voices and languages from across the galaxy. It’s a hypersonic hit heard in cantinas from the core worlds to the Outer Rim! If you’re wondering where you’ve heard it before, it’s a favorite of DJ R-3X at Oga’s Cantina in Black Spire Outpost!

An Evening With Gaya

On the first night of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, dinner features “An Evening with Gaya,” with a performance by the superstar in honor of its 275th anniversary. Her keyboardist, Ouanni, accompanies her. Warning, there are possible story spoilers ahead.

Gaya began her live performance off-stage and walked through the crowd towards the stage.

Between each of her songs, she talks about her history and asks guests where they’re from.

Gaya is a Twi’lek from Ryloth, a planet that has been occupied many times. She mentions that the Ryloth Stone, which brought harmony to her planet, has gone missing, and she has been searching for it.

She invites fan and aspiring musician Sandro Alimander on stage with her for a song about coaxium.

Lt. Croy sits in on the performance early on, then later interrupts with Stormtroopers. Gaya confronts him, sending him into stunned silence.

After Gaya returns to the stage, Captain Keevan whispers something to her. Gaya then leads the room in a dance, with help from Raithe and Sandro.

Gaya insists Lt. Croy join the dancing, and Raithe keeps him in the crowd. Is it possible this is all a distraction…?

Captain Keevan and Sammie, the mechanic, then present the Resistance fugitive Chewbacca to Croy.

Croy wants to take Chewbacca away, but Keevan insists Croy stay and continue to enjoy the performance.

Croy then leaves, and Raithe whispers one final message to Gaya before her final song. As she says to the audience, “You’ll have to ask me later to reveal my secrets.”

Complimentary Captain Mickey Print

During our Disney Wish sailing, the print was not among the gifts in our stateroom on the first day. It was set out on the bed after the Shimmering Seas Soirée on the day of the 25th anniversary festivities.

It was accompanied by a cake-shaped towel creation.

The print comes in a teal blue box. It says “25 Disney Cruise Line Silver Anniversary at Sea” in white letters.

The commemorative 11 x 14 print comes in a white plastic frame. It features Captain Mickey, in his traditional blue jacket and white hat, against a teal background.

The artwork is by Joe Kaminski.

It also came with a Certificate of Authenticity. “Bon Voyage for a Silver Anniversary at Sea” is across the top in bolded red letters.

It reads, “This Commemorate Print shows Captain Mickey celebrating 25 years of Disney Cruise Line magic. It’s a special Castaway Club gift — created as a way of saying thank you for sailing with us yet again on another enchanting voyage.” It also includes information about Kaminski.

Silver Anniversary at Sea

Disney Cruise Line is celebrating 25 years of sailing with the Silver Anniversary at Sea celebration on select sailings from May through September 2023. The first Disney Cruise Line ship, Disney Magic, began its maiden voyage on July 30, 1998.

Mickey and Minnie are wearing new shimmering teal and white costumes for the anniversary celebration. The rest of their friends also have new costumes.

Guests will be invited to join the ship’s captain and cruise director on one evening of each cruise for a special anniversary toast. They will be joined by Captain Mickey and Captain Minnie in their new Silver Anniversary at Sea outfits and the toast will feature the anniversary’s new theme song.

Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line ever to have a fireworks show at sea. A new 25th-anniversary fireworks display will be featured on some Silver Anniversary at Sea itineraries. The limited-time show features iconic Disney music and a new signature song. The show will be on most Bahamian, Caribbean, and Mediterranean sailings this summer.

A 25th anniversary pre-show is currently playing before the Disney Cruise Line sail away parties.

The anniversary of Disney Cruise Line also heralds the unveiling of a brand-new membership tier for Castaway Club, which recognizes returning Disney Cruise Line guests with exclusive rewards and perks. Honoring 25 years of Disney magic at sea, members will now earn the distinction of Pearl status after 25 Disney Cruise Line vacations. As the line’s biggest fans, Pearl members will unlock new at-home and onboard benefits. Check out the new Castaway Club lanyards and stateroom gifts.

The Shimmering Seas Collection of merchandise includes a Loungefly mini backpack, Spirit Jersey, and more. Check out some of the 25th anniversary merchandise and the Silver Anniversary pin.

There are also plenty of Silver Anniversary-inspired food and beverage items. Souvenirs include a popcorn bucket and a tumbler.

MagicBand+ will also debut on Disney Cruise Line this summer.

Shimmering Seas Sooirée

The Shimmering Seas Soirée happens once per cruise to commemorate Disney Cruise Line’s 25th anniversary. One day of our voyage was dedicated to Silver Anniversary at Sea celebrations, so the soiree happened that night. On sailings with the 25th anniversary fireworks show, the soirée will happen on the last night.

During the soirée, guests meet in the Grand Hall to share a toast and mingle with their Cruise Director, along with special guests dressed for the elegant occasion.

Free cocktails are available for the toast.

The toast is about five minutes long, and then Mickey and friends — in their Silver Anniversary outfits — head out into the crowd for meet and greets. They stay out for about thirty minutes.

Though only Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald appeared on stage for the toast, Daisy, Chip, and Dale came out for meet and greets.

Their anniversary outfits are teal and white with sparkling details.

Mickey and Minnie have new captain’s hats for the occasion.

The characters also appeared in these outfits on the first night of our sailing. If you’re unsure about when to meet the characters in their special Silver Anniversary outfits, ask a character attendant or at Guest Relations.

The soirée is similar to the character meet and greets that usually happen with the Wishing Star ceremony in the Grand Hall on the final night of Disney Wish sailings.

Chocolate Frog Wizard Card Mystery Pin Boxes – $16.00

The very popular Chocolate Frog treat at “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” now has its own line of collectible wizard card pins.

The pin box matches the original Chocolate Frog’s ornate pentagonal packaging. The “Chocolate Frog” logo is emblazoned in gold within the center indentation.

Each box contains one pin that is modeled after the collectible wizard cards that come as the prize in the Chocolate Frog box.

The box looks almost identical to the box that the Chocolate Frog treat comes in; however, it is a little bit smaller.

The back of the box shows each of the five collectible pins.

A closer look at the back of the box shows us what the pins look like. As you can see in the above picture, they are pentagonally shaped, just like the box.

The five different collectible pins are Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Albus Dumbledore, Salazar Slytherin, and Rowena Ravenclaw. Four of the five pins represent the founders of the “houses” of Harry Potter — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw.

Albus Dumbledore is not a founder of a “house” but was a very important character in the “Harry Potter” series, and served as headmaster of Hogwarts.

We were introduced to Chocolate Frogs in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which is the first book (and movie) of the “Harry Potter” series. This is also where Harry Potter meets his future best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

In the “Harry Potter” universe, Chocolate Frog cards are known as “Famous Witches/Wizard Cards.” The cards are usually traded amongst young wizards and witches. It contains pictures, information, and achievements of the famous witches and wizards that are featured on each of them.

We found these at Honeydukes in Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure for $16.00.

“Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” Photo Op

The “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” photo op popped up just in time to kick off Star Wars Month in Disneyland and May the 4th — the official “Star Wars” holiday. It’s also no coincidence that this brand new “Star Wars” show will be premiering on May the 4th.

The photo op shows a scene set in front of the Jedi Temple on Tanoo. The characters in this photo op include Yoda, Nash Durango, Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, Nubs, and RJ-83.

Kai Brightstar is seen holding the green lightsaber and standing atop the blocks held up by Nubs. The other character seen holding a lightsaber is Lys Solay. Nash Durango is holding RJ-83.

Here is a closer look at Yoda meditating in front of the Jedi Temple. You can also see some X-Wing Starfighters.

“Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” premiers on May 4 on Disney + and a new episode will be available every Friday on Disney Junior.

“Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures”

Set in the High Republic era, “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” is notable for being the first of its kind in the “Star Wars” universe, with a concept specifically geared toward young audiences. Several fans have been excited by this prospect, finally having the potential opportunity to introduce their children to a beloved fandom with less intense but equally qualitative adventures. The story follows a group of Jedi younglings centuries before events witnessed in the prequel trilogy films “as they study the ways of the Force, explore the galaxy, help citizens and creatures in need, and learn valuable skills needed to become Jedi along the way.”

Elliot Bour serves as Supervising Director, with other notable directing work on “Elena of Avalor,” “Kronk’s New Groove,” and “Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo.” Michael Olson is the showrunner, known for his work on “Puppy Dog Pals.” The cast of “Young Jedi Adventures” includes Jamaal Avery Jr. as youngling Kai Brightstar, Emma Berman as pilot/friend Nash Durango, Juliet Donenfeld as youngling Lys Solay, Dee Bradley Baker as youngling Nubs, Jonathan Lipow as droid RJ-83, and Piotr Michael as Master Yoda.
