Hong Kong Disneyland Tests New Solar-Powered, Touch-Free Trash Cans

A hygienic, high-tech trash can has debuted on Main Street USA at Hong Kong Disneyland, which may set a new standard for Disney trash cans, if successful.

As reported by X user @hkdlfantasy, Hong Kong Disneyland is testing a new generation of trash cans in the Castle Hub area, introducing a design that may improve hygiene, sustainability, and trash capacity.

As described in the original X post, the updated bins feature a foot pedal that allows for touch-free disposal, reducing the need for guests to make hand contact with high-touch surfaces in busy areas of the park.

In addition to the foot-operated mechanism, the new trash cans are equipped with a solar panel that powers an internal trash compactor. The compaction feature is designed to increase the amount of waste each unit can hold, potentially reducing the frequency of cast member servicing and improving operational efficiency during peak attendance periods.

Visually, the cans maintain a classic Main Street–inspired green color scheme, likely in an effort to blend seamlessly with the park’s older cans and established aesthetic while incorporating modern technology.

We have previously highlighted similar trash can-related initiatives at other Disney destinations, including here at Walt Disney World resort. Regardless of the differences in design features and smart functionality, the previous solar panel trash can test does not appear to have panned out across the Florida parks.

This new design at Hong Kong Disneyland, however, with its integration of a compaction feature, may prove a worthwhile investment to accommodate the larger, steadier stream of guests seen across Disney World properties.
