Zootopia 2 Breaks Records as it Hits $1 Billion at the Box Office

Zootopia 2 will pass $1 billion at the global box office on Friday, making it the second Hollywood movie to reach $1 billion this year. The first was Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, which grossed $1.03 billion.

Zootopia 2 Makes $1 Billion

Disney reported that the film has earned $986.1 million globally and will surpass $1 billion today. This comes after 17 days in theaters, making it the fastest PG film and fastest animated film to ever hit the milestone.

With Moana 2, this also marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever back-to-back billion dollar releases. Since 2013, five of the studios’ films have hit $1 billion: Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana, Zootopia, and Zootopia 2.

“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness,” said Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world — and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

Though it has only earned $232.7 million domestically, Zootopia 2 has made $753.4 million internationally, seeing particular success in China. With $272 million, it is China’s highest animated opening of all time for a non-local title and the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time. The latter record was hit in only five days.

Disney Parks have a load of offerings available for the new movie, like a limited-time macaron, a limited-time sipper, a ride overlay, and a new puppet show at Shanghai Disneyland, limited-time meet and greets, and last but not least, the new show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Zootopia: Better Zoogether.
