Star Wars: A New Hope, the film that launched the famous franchise, will return to theaters for its 50th anniversary in 2027. Although previously announced, the official Star Wars website has updated the re-release date.
Star Wars: A New Hope Re-Release
The film was originally released as just Star Wars on May 25, 1977. Now titled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, it will be back in theaters on February 19, 2027. The date was previously set for April 30, 2027 per Variety.

Now several months ahead of its actual anniversary, the February re-release ensures A New Hope doesn’t step on the toes of Star Wars: Starfighter, a new film hitting theaters on May 28, 2027. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth. The move-up likely adds even more space between the two releases.
Before Starfighter, Disney and Lucasfilm will release The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22, 2026. It will be the first new Star Wars film in theaters since Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Star Wars: A New Hope was written and directed by George Lucas. It was produced by Gary Kurtz. It stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, and Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
