Netflix recently acquired Warner Bros. Discovery, but they were also reportedly eyeing Disney, Fox, and Electronic Arts.
Netflix Considered Buying Disney
Netflix won the bidding war against Comcast to acquire Warner Bros. in a deal valued at $82.7 billion.
According to a new Bloomberg report, Netflix also considered buying Disney, Fox Corporation, and Electronic Arts Inc. (EA). All three possibilities fell apart as executives couldn’t agree on a deal and were worried about the potential impact on their stock price if they paid too much for an asset.
Netflix and Warner Bros.
The Warner Bros. transaction will close in 12 to 18 months, with Discovery Global spinning off into a separate company that includes CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery. Netflix plans to maintain Warner Bros.’ current operations.
WB properties now owned by Netflix include Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and the DC Universe.
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said, “This acquisition will improve our offering and accelerate our business for decades to come.”
Disney’s Acquisitions
Under Bob Iger’s original tenure as Disney CEO, the company was known for its many acquisitions. These included Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel. In 2019, Disney purchase Twentieth Century Fox, now known as 20th Century Studios (Fox Corp was split into a separate company).
Any company that successfully bought Disney would have a huge boom in famous IPs. There have been multiple rumors over the years that Apple could buy Disney.
