Walt Disney Imagineering shared a new “Great Moments in Imagineering” all about the Pepper’s Ghost effect most famously used in The Haunted Mansion’s ballroom scene.
The Haunted Mansion Pepper’s Ghost Effect

Pepper’s Ghost is the technique that makes the ghosts of The Haunted Mansion’s ballroom appear transparent. As explained in Imagineering’s video (below), the effect was first developed by John Henry Pepper and Henry Dircks. Imagineer Yale Gracey then utilized it for The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
The video also explores two other advanced uses of Pepper’s Ghost at Walt Disney World. At The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Pepper’s Ghost is combined with video to create floating ghosts with a full range of movement.
The most recent use of Pepper’s Ghost by Walt Disney Imagineering is at Test Track 3.0 in EPCOT. In the home garage scene, Pepper’s Ghost is used to “transform” ride vehicles in a reflection. Imagineers developed the effect using a shoebox model and then a large-scale mock-up.
