They are synonymous with Renaissance fairs, Medieval Times, and, interestingly, Disney Parks—the turkey leg. These giant drumsticks can be seen throughout the parks, their scent either tantalizing or troubling to park goers. The Disney turkey leg is either beloved on par with the DOLE Whip or disliked by park guests. So what is the fascination with this snack and how has it gotten to be one of the quintessential Disney snacks?

The Disney Turkey Leg
What is a Disney Turkey Leg?

Sourced from Midwestern Tom (male) turkeys, these turkey legs are huge. They are often said to taste like ham, likely due to the brine of salt and brown sugar they’re soaked in before smoking. They’re even pinkish, like ham, which surprises some people who wouldn’t expect that of turkey meat. These large legs are sold throughout the parks, with guests chowing down as they walk by.
History of The Disney Turkey Leg

Unsurprisingly, the turkey leg made its debut in 1989 in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. That snack stand, right by Big Al’s Coonskin Caps, may have been the first location for the snack, but it was hardly the last. Within a few years, turkey legs expanded throughout Disney World and made their way to Disneyland, too.

Turkey Leg Variations

Although the turkey leg has a cult following, the Disney Parks have to mix things up every once in a while. Which is how we end up with new turkey leg flavors to savor. There was the honey-glazed turkey leg introduced in 2023 for the holidays in California Adventure, or the buffalo, BBQ, and smoked flavors that showed up at Edelweiss Snacks in November 2022. They pop up from time to time, so keep an eye out if you want to expand your turkey leg palate.
Turkey Leg Merchandise

With all of the fandom around turkey legs, it’s no surprise Disney has a history of merchandise. In 2024, there was a cartoony t-shirt with a giant turkey leg, for instance, while the Disney Eats collection had several homages to the almighty turkey leg. Don’t be surprised if you continue to see turkey leg merch around the parks as they continue to dominate the Disney snack hierarchy.
