Also producing is Marc Platt, known for producing Broadway shows and movie musicals, including the stage and film versions of Wicked and Disney’s live-action Snow White, as well as Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.
Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Hustlers) will write and direct.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that this is a passion project for Carpenter and that she approached the studio about a year ago.
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll has been adapted dozens of times, notably by Disney. Universal’s rival first adapted the book and related stories with the Alice Comedies shorts in the 1920s. More famous now is their 1951 animated Alice in Wonderland. Most recently, the stories inspired Disney’s 2010 live-action Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and a 2016 sequel.
Sabrina Carpenter rose to fame as Maya Hart in Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World. She then took off as a singer, releasing seven studio albums.
