The Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau finally clarified the difference between the show’s season 4 and the upcoming movie. However, the chances of a fourth season still look slim.
The Mandalorian Season 4 and Movie
In the new issue of Empire Magazine, Favreau said, “We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here.” (via ComicBook.com)
The third season of The Mandalorian aired from March to April 2023. Though the fourth season was known to be in development, a movie follow-up was announced in January 2024. Until now, it’s been unclear if the movie — The Mandalorian and Grogu — was replacing season 4 or not.
Favreau stated the movie was built from the ground-up, not re-worked from the season 4 scripts. “It’s structured around a movie structure,” he said, “as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.”
Still, it sounds like The Mandalorian season 4 isn’t in development anymore. Whether or not they move forward on it may depend on how the film is received. Reportedly, Disney wants Lucasfilm to focus on film production instead of TV shows. If The Mandalorian and Grogu is successful, it could spawn a movie series.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22, 2026. Though the story will tie in with Ahsoka season 2, which doesn’t have an air date yet, “newcomers who don’t know their Ahsoka from their elbow can jump right in,” said Empire.
