Sigourney Weaver Says New “Alien” Script is “Very Strong”

During New York Comic Con on Friday morning, Sigourney Weaver said she has seen the first 50 pages of a potential new Alien sequel script, which she described as “very strong.”

Weaver, whose resume features some of the biggest sci-fi blockbusters of a generation and even the forthcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, rose to meteoric fame with her role as Ellen Ripley in Alien in 1979. Including that initial film, there have been four films in the Alien franchise, all of which included Weaver. So it’s no wonder fans were so excited to hear the actress tease the potential for a fifth.

During her panel with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Weaver explained that she’s friends with Alien producer Walter Hill, who wrote the pages. “…Hill is a very good friend of mine, and he wrote 50 pages of where Ripley would be now, and they’re quite extraordinary,” Weaver stated during the panel, according to Variety.

She continued, “I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox or Disney…I’ve never felt the need [to reprise the role]. I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover.’ What Walter has written seems so true to me, as very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind, but she’s a problem to them, so she’s sort of tucked away. I think it’s a very strong first 50 pages. I’m thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be.”

Weaver Returns to “Avatar”

While we await the fate of Ripley in a potential new Alien sequel, Weaver’s work keeps coming. She will reprise her role as Kiri in the upcoming Avatar sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which comes out December 19. Kiri is the adopted daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri, but she was born biologically by Dr. Grace Augustine after her death. Weaver originally played Augustine, who dies in the first film.
