Complete Guide to Disney Resort Refillable Mugs

When you’re on a Disney Parks vacation, staying hydrated (and oftentimes, caffeinated) is essential. That’s why many guests opt for Disney resort refillable mugs for their trip. These mugs come in several colors and can help keep you going without paying every time you need a fill-up. Here’s everything you need to know about these vibrant beverage accessories.

What Are Disney Resort Refillable Mugs?

Disney resort refillable mugs are reusable mugs you can purchase for use at the Walt Disney World Resort. They currently cost $22.99 (plus tax), and their designs change periodically. Often, the mugs will come with a few different handle/lid colors to differentiate them between different vacation party members. These mugs are not currently offered at Disneyland Resort.

Guests who have purchased a Disney Dining Plan receive their refillable mug for free as part of the plan. This includes both the full Disney Dining Plan and the Quick-Service Dining Plan.

The current design, shown above, premiered in December 2023. These mugs come with pink, green, orange, or blue handles and lids. All feature the Fab Five on a road trip with various Disney World Resort icons in the background, including Spaceship Earth, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and The Skyliner.

How Do The Mugs Work?

Two colorful Resort Refillable Mugs are displayed beside a sign at Walt Disney World. The sign offers unlimited refills of drinks at resort locations for the length of stay, priced at $22.99. Take advantage before prices increase!

After buying the cup, it is activated by a Cast Member. It is functional for 14 days after activation, regardless of the length of your stay. You can use them for free refills of fountain drinks (which often include Powerade), coffee, tea, or hot cocoa at any Walt Disney World Resort hotel—not just the one you’re staying at. While the refills are not available at the parks, we often fill our cups before leaving our hotel and then use it for ice water throughout the day, as that is free at the parks.

There is also a mug wash sink next to the drink refill spots, so you aren’t mixing incompatible flavors. That’s particularly helpful if you’re a coffee drinker, since the taste of coffee doesn’t often mix well with beverages like fruity Powerade or soda.

These refillable mugs work because they have a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip embedded in their bottom. The chip communicates with the fountain and may display the number of active days remaining, depending on the type of machine. Because of the RFID chip, the soda fountain is also aware of how often you refill the mug. That means there is a waiting period of two or three minutes between fills, likely to prevent misuse.

Most hotels still have the old-fashioned soda fountains, but they’re quickly being converted to Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. The only hotels that currently have Freestyle machines are Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort, Yacht Club Resort, Beach Club Resort, Port Orleans – French Quarter, Riviera Resort, and the new Island Tower at the Polynesian Village Resort.

Old Disney Resort Refillable Mugs

Disney Can Beat Quarantine Blues - refillable mugs

Whether you purchased a Disney resort refillable mug last month or last year, you may be wondering if you can bring it back for use on your next Disney World trip. The answer is complicated. Officially, no. Disney does not reactivate the cups for reuse past the initial 14-day activation period.

However, anecdotally, guests have reported being able to bring old mugs back for reactivation for the cost of a new one. We want to note that, although it may be possible to do so on your next trip, most Cast Members will follow official protocol and require you to purchase a new mug. This seems to be the exception rather than a normal procedure.

Seasonal or Special Varieties

From time to time, Disney will release a new type of mug for a special event or holiday season. They’ve been known to have Halloween and Christmas refillable mugs, for example. There were also special mugs released for the Disney 100th anniversary and the Disney World 50th anniversary. When these are offered, you can often still purchase the regular mugs too.

The resort refillable mugs are not to be confused with the now-discontinued water park refillable mugs. Until May of 2025, guests could purchase a refillable mug for one-day use at Disney’s Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon. These mugs were only refillable at the specific water park for the day of purchase, but could be reactivated for future uses. They were not interchangeable with the resort mugs.

How much is a refillable mug at Disney resorts?

Currently, refillable mugs cost $22.99 (plus tax) at the Disney World resort hotels. However, if you are on a Disney dining plan, your refillable mug is included for each member of the party on the plan.

Are Disney refillable mugs worth it?

In my experience, absolutely. The cost of an individual fountain drink is between $4 and $5. If you buy just one a day for a week’s stay, that is easily $28-$35. With the refillable mug, however, you can enjoy multiple beverages a day, which can result in significant cost savings.

Where can I refill my Disney resort mugs?

You can refill your Disney resort mug at beverage stations at any Disney World hotel property, even the hotels you aren’t staying in. These beverage stations can be found in various places around the properties, including the dining halls, pool areas, and some hotels (like Caribbean Beach) even have them in the hotel room block areas.

How often can you refill your Disney resort mug?

As often as you would like for the 14-day activation period. However, there is a 2-3 minute waiting period between fill-ups.

Can you reactivate Disney resort mugs?

Technically, no. The official word from Disney is that the mugs cannot be reactivated. Guests have said anecdotally that they have been able to reactivate their mugs for the price of a new one. We do caution guests, though, that most Cast Members will follow protocol and sell you a new mug rather than reactivating an old one.

What drinks are included in a Disney refillable mug?

Any beverages from the soda fountain machines, cocoa, tea, and coffee are included.
