A settlement has been reached in Upper Deck’s lawsuit against Disney Lorcana’s parent company and designer, reports ICv2.
Upper Deck vs. Disney Lorcana
Upper Deck filed a lawsuit against Disney Lorcana company Ravensburger and lead designer Ryan Miller over two years ago, before the game launched. Miller was formerly an Upper Deck contractor and they claimed he stole their original game idea, repackaging it as Lorcana for Ravensburger.
Federal Judge Kymberly Evanson ruled in favor of Ravensburger on most of the claims earlier this month, leaving only a claim alleging breach of contract on Miller’s part. Upper Deck amended their complaint to include Ravensburger again but this was rejected by the judge.
Ravensburger will pay a settlement that amounts to $39,000. Ravensburger said this “represents the contractor fees Upper Deck paid Ryan Miller, which Ravensburger is happy to return.”
“Everyone at Ravensburger, including Ryan, acted appropriately and professionally – we did nothing wrong, and this outcome reflects that,” said Ravensburger Chief Product officer Filip Francke. “On behalf of everyone at Ravensburger, I would like to personally thank the court for conducting the proceedings with the dignity and fairness this case deserved.”
Upper Deck previously told ICv2 that they intended to appeal the earlier rulings and continue with a lawsuit in Europe. They did not respond to ICv2’s request for comment regarding the settlement.
